The U.S. has launched an economic attack on our province and country. This is a serious and immediate threat.
We need a plan—one that defends Island interests and protects our industries, workers, and businesses. It’s that simple: fight and protect.
Islanders expect clear leadership from their provincial government. But so far, the Premier doesn’t seem to share this urgency. His only response since the trade war was announced? Wait until next week.
The Liberal Caucus sees two immediate priorities:
Islanders deserve to know what the province’s plan is. That includes:
What actions Dennis King is taking to push back.
How the King Government is protecting Islanders and our economy.
To fight back, the Liberals believe:
The PEI Liquor Commission should immediately stop ordering American products and send back any already on the shelves.
The government must provide a full and detailed list of contracts with U.S. companies—so we can start cutting ties where possible.
To protect Islanders, the government needs to be upfront about the potential fallout—especially since they’ve had months to prepare for this.
PEI depends on the U.S. market for seafood and agriculture, among other industries. Local businesses and workers are rightfully worried. Costs could skyrocket, putting more pressure on Islanders.
Yet, when I asked the Premier about this crisis back in November, his response was:
“I think we need to increase NATO spending to two per cent and I think we need to increase our border patrol protection services.”
Neither of those things are his responsibility. And surely, after all this time, he has more to offer than that. Islanders deserve answers—now.
To provide clarity of this ongoing and evolving situation, and to ensure that Islanders have immediate access to the necessary answers to their questions, the Official Opposition will be formally submitting an urgent request on Monday, February 3rd that the Legislative Assembly reconvene early and as soon as possible to discuss the immediate challenges posed to our province by this American tariff plan.
