Liberal Opposition Calls on Government to Reduce Provincial Sales Tax to Address Cost of Living Crisis

The Official Opposition is calling on Premier Dennis King’s government to reduce the provincial portion of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) by 2% to help Islanders struggling with the rising cost of living. Despite taking in record tax revenue over the past five years, the government has failed to deliver meaningful relief to families facing skyrocketing prices and declining public services.

“Islanders are feeling the pinch as prices for food, housing, and energy continue to climb, while the government sits on record amounts of sales tax revenue,” says Hal Perry, Leader of the Official Opposition. “It’s time for the government to do more than collect taxes – it’s time to give Islanders the break they need.”

The Official Opposition is urging the government to act now and reduce the provincial portion of the HST to ease the financial pressure on households across the Island.

“Over the last five years, the provincial Conservatives have been raking in more tax dollars through income tax, sales tax, gas tax, and property tax – yet Islanders are left with the worst healthcare in Canada and an affordability crisis that’s only getting worse.  It’s time to give back some of that revenue and provide real relief to those who need it most. Cutting the sales tax won’t solve all our cost-of-living problems, but it will help.”
