As we move toward the next school year, Liberal Opposition Leader Hal Perry is pushing for more information on a classroom cell phone ban.
“Last week, the Liberals stated their support for a classroom cell phone ban. We believe this is the way to go, because too many students are being distracted – and bullying has become a real problem.
“We are confident that such a ban is entirely workable – and will help young people to concentrate on their studies during classroom time.”
In response, Education Minister Natalie Jameson issued a cryptic social media post that says “government is planning on introducing something very soon.”
While such sentiments are welcome, the complete lack of detail is a matter for concern.
“Too often, we have seen this do-nothing government offer promises, with no follow-up. Therefore, I have sent a letter to the Standing Committee on Education asking for a meeting with the Minister. I think we need to firm up a commitment on a cell phone ban and make sure that government’s apparent plan is workable and achievable prior to the start of the 2024 school year.”
