With September fast approaching, it is time for the government to ban the use of cell phones during classroom time, says Liberal Opposition Leader Hal Perry.
“Parents, teachers – we all want kids to learn during classroom time. It is now quite obvious that cell phones during classes are a massive distraction. A ban on cell phone use during class time is now overdue.”
The effort to ban the use of cell phones during school time is now widespread. The provinces of Ontario, Nova Scotia and Alberta have all strictly limited the use of cell phones and other personal mobile devices in public schools. Saskatchewan is also exploring a ban.
“I have heard from many students, teachers and parents that a cell phone ban is the way to go,” Perry said. “There are too many stories of distracted children in school – and sadly, far too many incidents involving social media and bullying.”
Over the next couple of months, the Liberal Opposition will prepare potential legislation to ensure a cell phone ban – in the event that the Minister of Education does not simply issue a directive. Furthermore, a potential ban could be considered at a Standing Committee. To that end, a letter has been sent to the Chair of the Standing Committee on Education to quickly begin public hearings and build a case for a ban.
“In this particular matter, I am already convinced: A ban is the way to go,” Perry said. “However, I think committee hearings may be helpful so that government can clearly understand the implications of continued use of cell phones in classrooms.”
