The recent government announcement to recruit new allied health professionals to PEI with a return-in-service agreement is a small gesture to attract these critical workers. However, it glaringly omits any retention incentives for current allied health workers who have tirelessly helped Islanders recover from the healthcare crisis. Our existing allied health professionals, like RTs, OTs, physios, and X-ray technicians, have ample opportunities across the country and can choose to live and work anywhere.
Retaining these exceptional staff is essential.
Furthermore, support staff in our healthcare system, such as porters, dietary staff, housekeeping staff, admitting personnel, and ward clerks, continue to be overlooked. They deserve monetary recognition as a sign of our deep appreciation. I urge the government to broaden their approach and review their recruitment and retention strategies. Once again, the King government is fostering a toxic work environment that pits staff members against each other.
